CLOSE UP OF VADA VADA (to camera) I was born jaundiced. Once I sat on a toilet seat at a Truck stop and caught hemorrhoids. And i've learned to live with this chicken Bone that's been lodged in my throat for the past three years, so I knew Dad would be devastated when he learned of my latest affliction. (to Harry) Dad, I don't wanna upset you, but my left breast is developing at a significantly faster rate than my right. It can only mean one thing. Cancer. I'm dying. HARRY (ignoring Vada) O.K. Sweetie, hand me the mayonnaise out of the fridge. FRONT OF SULTENFUSS' HOUSE Vada closes front door and goes down the steps to a group of boys
I really like how the beginning of the movie introduced the main character. The protagonist (Vada) speaks in narration to the audience. It creates a introduction to her character before any main plot begins. We learn that Vada believes she has all these illnesses and issues. We don't think much of this till Vada starts speaking to her Dad about her left breast developing faster than the other, till she abruptly concludes its cancer. It seems normal to Harry (her father) because he seems to ignore it and what she is saying. It creates an interesting plot for the rest of the movie.
I want to implement this into my film. I would like an opening of my film to be narration over an action my character is doing. I think it establishes a good understanding of what the film will be about in a good, short monologue and I think audiences enjoy being able to feel like the protagonist is communicating with them, like almost breaking the fourth wall.
