According to, watchthetitles.com, they state: "To create the cut-outs of Juno, Smith and co-designer Jenny Lee printed every frame, outlined Juno, then photo-copied the prints several times to degrade the quality. Each of these frames were then hand-colored and cut out with scissors." Its amazing that this much creativity went into this opening scene, and the fact that this was colored and created using only a photo-copier and their bare hands. It was so simple, but the results came out so professional, it would be hard to believe this was done purely colored by hand. To add on, the titles and the credits were hand-drawn as well. Jason Reitman and Russel Smith worked to create this vision into a work of art (which, by the way, the succeeded on). Smith states:
“Despite the massive amount of time it took to pull this off, we had a fantastic time working on the project and every time we picked up a pen or a pair of scissors we were happy to be working on it. Jason Reitman‘s constant enthusiasm and positive energy inspired us throughout the production process, and we are proud to have been involved with this film.”
I originally wanted to implement a similar cartoon intro to my film, but after researching further I decided It would be very hard to re-create this in any way, shape or form. But… this is a really cool idea as far as camera shots that may want to use for my film.
